Legislation enforcement officers clashed with protesters in Los Angeles for a 3rd day after President Donald Trump deployed the Nationwide Guard to stamp out demonstrations in opposition to raids on suspected unlawful immigrants.

Officers and guards fired tear fuel, smoke-filled canisters and rubber bullets at protesters close to a detention centre in downtown LA in the course of the protests, which had been largely peaceable by means of the day. By late afternoon, some protesters managed to halt autos on the 101 freeway close to Metropolis Corridor, snarling visitors and prompting officers to fireside a barrage of flash-bang gadgets.

The deployment of Nationwide Guard troops on Sunday prompted Gavin Newsom, California governor, to accuse the Trump administration of a “serious breach of state sovereignty”. It was the primary time since 1965 {that a} US president has deployed a state’s Nationwide Guard with out being requested by the governor.

Over the weekend, Trump invoked a hardly ever used regulation designed to repress invasions and rebellions to ship within the troops, a transfer deemed pointless by native regulation enforcement officers and decried by Newsom as “inflammatory”.

The US president justified the transfer on Sunday with incendiary language: “A once great American City, Los Angeles, has been invaded and occupied by Illegal Aliens and Criminals.”

On his Reality Social platform, Trump claimed, with out proof, that “violent, insurrectionist mobs are swarming and attacking our Federal Agents to try and stop our deportation operations”.

The big protest in downtown LA drew a crowd of hundreds, some waving Mexican flags and carrying indicators that mentioned: “Immigrants Make America Great”.

When some protesters tossed water bottles at police, others within the crowd yelled: “Don’t throw things — this is what Trump wants you to do!”

The unrest within the second-largest US metropolis has been prompted by federal brokers arresting dozens of individuals in a sweep of native companies.

On Sunday night, Trump didn’t rule out sending in marines after defence secretary Pete Hegseth threatened the transfer on Saturday.

In his Reality Social publish, Trump mentioned he had ordered officers “to take all such action necessary to liberate Los Angeles from the Migrant Invasion, and put an end to these Migrant riots”.

Deploying as much as 2,000 guardsmen will check the flexibility of closely Democratic states to withstand the Trump administration’s agenda and shield their residents from its enforcement actions.

Trump’s choice to “federalise” the Nationwide Guard — or switch it from state to federal management — was extremely uncommon. It was final accomplished in 1992, when then-President George HW Bush despatched guardsmen to LA to manage riots following the beating by police of Rodney King. In that occasion, the Guard’s help was requested by California’s governor, Pete Wilson.

Vermont senator Bernie Sanders, who votes with Democrats, warned that Trump was “moving this country rapidly toward authoritarianism”. He accused the president of defying the Structure and the rule of regulation.

Nanette Barragán, a Democratic member of Congress whose district consists of the areas of southern Los Angeles that witnessed lots of the protests, instructed CNN that Trump was “sending in the National Guard because he doesn’t like the scenes. He doesn’t like the scenes of people peacefully protesting.”

She added that she had spoken to sheriffs who mentioned that they had issues underneath management and that there was no want for federal backup.

Barragán mentioned officers in Los Angeles had been instructed by the federal authorities to “get ready for 30 days of enforcement”, whereas border tsar Tom Homan instructed NBC that “around 150” undocumented immigrants had already been detained within the metropolis over the previous two days.

Trump has threatened federal funding cuts as a result of California’s positions on immigration, transgender rights and different issues.

In retaliation, Newsom proposed that California would possibly withhold federal tax funds, stating on X: “Californians pay the bills for the federal government . . . Maybe it’s time to cut that off.”
